In a friendship that began more than twenty years ago, Rosemary Jensen helped establish the Rafiki (Swahili for "friend") Foundation to come alongside Africans devastated by AIDS and build communities of physical and spiritual hope. From its small beginnings in the Jensen home, Rafiki is now an international organization that establishes schools and homes for orphans, builds vocational schools for teens, and provides medical care for local people in ten African nations.

In word and picture, this moving book unfolds the Rafiki story, the best of friendships in the worst of circumstances.

This is the story of Lorine, abandoned at a hospital and beaten at a children's home before coming to Rafiki at the age of five.

This is the story of Jimmy and Jane, twins left in isolation during infancy for six months, naked and ignored on rubber sheets.

This is the story of Atembem, named "I have nothing" by her mother who left her.

This is Rafiki.

Annie E. J. Thorp grew up in Africa and has been intimately familiar with the Rafiki story since the foundation's inception. She is an author and illustrator, and currently resides in Pensacola, Florida, where she works as a design consultant.
