This baker’s dozen of bluegrass gospel gems helps fill a void in both the bluegrass and gospel music realm. Unquestionably, church music mightily influenced the style of close-harmony singing that is an integral, even an essential, part of bluegrass music from its very inception. There are certainly many gospel records by individual bluegrass groups, but still not a lot of compilations, or anthologies, spotlighting great individual songs. The Bluegrass Gospel Songbook is another step toward rectifying that situation. From the opening strains of J. D. Crowe & the New South’s “Crying Holy,” an exuberant and unforgettable treatment, to relative newcomers Dailey & Vincent’s gorgeous vocalizing on “Amazing Grace,” we know we are in the presence of greatness and of timeless tunes done in a timeless fashion. Along with the classic “Amazing Grace,” so well-known it could almost be called our sacred national anthem, both “Power in the Blood” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” fall into the category of well-worn hymnal favorites.
